Following an unauthorized meeting with an Afghan envoy in Islamabad on Monday, the Maldives recalled its senior diplomat in Pakistan, according to official sources.
The Maldives Foreign Ministry stated that the government had “not sanctioned” Friday’s highly publicized meeting between Taliban representative Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb and Maldives High Commissioner Mohamed Thoha.
Without providing specifics, the ministry statement stated, “Therefore, the Maldivian government has taken appropriate action.”
Thoha has been recalled, according to an official source who told AFP, and his name has been removed from the Maldives embassy in Islamabad’s website.
No other nation has formally recognized their government since the Taliban overthrew the Western-backed government in 2021 and established a strict interpretation of Islamic rule.
