Washington, DC Advocates claim that the United States Senate’s vote later this week on proposals to prohibit a $20 billion arms sale with Israel will establish a precedent for congressional attempts to stop arms deliveries to the US ally.
The bills, known as Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (JRDs), were presented in September by Senator Bernie Sanders, a progressive independent who caucuses with the Democrats. On November 13, Sanders declared that he will bring the JRDs to the Senate floor for a vote this week.
Rights organizations and an increasing number of Democratic politicians have been supporting the campaign, which is unlikely to succeed in the largely pro-Israel house.
