D.C. Donald Trump’s federal criminal prosecution, which accused him of trying to rescind his 2020 election defeat, was rejected by a US judge on Monday.
The court’s decision follows prosecutors’ attempts to get the case and another case dropped, citing Justice Department protocol that forbids bringing charges against a sitting president.
US District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s order ends the federal effort to prosecute Trump for his attempts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election, which culminated with a mob of his supporters attacking the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Special Counsel Jack Smith, the senior prosecutor in charge of both cases, moved to dismiss the election case and put an end to his efforts to resurrect a second case.
