A Manhattan robber who killed an 87-year-old in 2019 was once asked to receive a lighter sentence under the theory of “restorative justice.”
On May 13, 2018, footage shows that Matthew Lee, 57, ambushed Dr. Young Kun Kim, a former lecturer at Lehman College, from behind at a Citibank ATM on Broadway. It looks as though the deadly blow—a hit to the head from behind—took place off-camera.
After being admitted to the hospital, Kim passed away from his wounds. Within a week, police had identified Lee as the suspect and taken him into custody.
According to a 2019 New York Post article, Kim lived through both the Korean War and the Japanese occupation of Korea. At the Manhattan courthouse sentence, his son showed forgiveness to the murderer.
