After Denmark denied a Japanese request to extradite him, anti-whaling activist Paul Watson was freed from a five-month detention in Greenland.
Last July, when his ship moored in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, Mr. Watson, 74, was taken into custody by authorities.
He was suspected of damaging a Japanese whaling ship, interfering with business, and hurting a crew member during an encounter in Antarctic waters in February 2010, according to a 2012 Japanese warrant that prompted police action.
Mr. Watson, a Canadian-American who appeared on the reality television program Whale Wars, had denied any misconduct. He expressed his “relief” at being released and able to visit his kids back home to the BBC.
