The 600-year-old organization will continue after the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has indicated that he will have a successor.
He stated that “no-one else has any authority to interfere in this matter” and that only the trust he established could name his successor in a video message that his supporters eagerly awaited.
Dalai Lamas are “reincarnated” after they pass away, according to Tibetan tradition. Succession is a very controversial topic because China invaded Tibet in 1950 and the present Dalai Lama is living in exile in India.
Beijing denied the report, stating that his successor would have to be vetted by the government and come from within China.
