KARACHI: In accordance with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s orders, the much awaited New Gwadar International Airport is scheduled to open on December 30.

An important milestone in regional connectivity will be reached when Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the country’s flag airline, operates the airport’s first commercial flight.

A recent five-hour meeting between the Airports Authority and PIA concluded important operational issues, signaling the start of final preparations.

According to the sources, in order to guarantee seamless operations from day one, PIA will deploy personnel and necessary equipment, including as check-in systems, in the days ahead.

It is anticipated that the airport, which was built with $246 million in Chinese investment, will increase regional trade and tourism.
