TOKYO: As bilateral trade talks garner international attention amid Washington’s tariff war, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has stated that his nation will emphasize “fairness” in any conversations with US President Donald Trump’s administration on exchange rates.
Ishiba offered leniency on US charges of non-tariff obstacles to the Japanese auto industry and suggested Tokyo may purchase more US energy during a discussion show on public broadcaster NHK.
Trump has stated that he wants his charges that Tokyo purposefully devalues its currency to provide its exporters an unfair edge to be included in the negotiations. Trump unexpectedly joined the first session of US-Japan talks on Wednesday and hailed “big progress.”
