Kolkata: At least fifteen people were killed by a ferocious fire that tore through a hotel in Kolkata, India, according to police on Wednesday. Some of the victims climbed out of windows and onto the rooftop to escape.
After the fire started on Tuesday night, Kolkata police head Manoj Verma told AFP that several people had been rescued from the cheap hotel’s rooms and roof.
Verma stated that an investigation has been started to find out what caused the fire. “The hotel turned into a gas chamber and it appears that many people suffocated to death,” she said.
88 people were staying at the Rituraj Hotel in central Kolkata’s crowded business sector when the fire started.
A dozen or more people were receiving treatment after being burned.
