According to US media, a Palestinian activist and Columbia University student who was detained by US immigration officials has been freed.
When Mohsen Mahdawi appeared in Vermont for an American citizenship interview in mid-April, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) held him despite his permanent US residency or “green card” status.
The legal team for Mr. Mahdawi filed a plea for his release, claiming that he had been wrongfully imprisoned.
He was undercutting US foreign policy, according to the US authorities. The detention was “in direct retaliation for his advocacy on behalf of Palestinians and because of his identity as a Palestinian,” according to Luna Droubi, one of his attorneys.
