Somalia’s decision to prohibit visitors with Taiwanese passports from entering or passing through the East African nation has drawn criticism from Taiwan.
According to Taiwan’s foreign ministry, the ban went into effect on Wednesday after Somali aviation authorities issued an order last week.
As Taiwan, a self-governing island claimed by China, strengthens connections with Somaliland, which broke away from Somalia 34 years ago but is still mostly unrecognized internationally, Somalia has not yet responded to the restriction.
China and Somalia were both incensed when Taiwan and Somaliland established embassies in each other’s cities in 2020.
