According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the coast of Chile occurred Friday near the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of only 10 km (6 miles), prompting evacuations because of the possibility of a tsunami.
Although there was no damage to people or vital infrastructure, Chile’s SENAPRED disaster agency issued a tsunami warning and advised evacuations along the southern coast.
President Gabriel Boric stated on X that “we’re calling to evacuate the coast in the whole region of Magallanes,” and that all state resources will be made ready to address any effects.
