Out of sight and hear of protesters, Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez were married on Friday in a lavish ceremony surrounded by the wealthy and well-known on an island in Venice’s lagoon.
“This city looks unattainable! “It can’t exist and yet, here it is!” Bezos exclaimed to a journalist from La Repubblica on Thursday as he sped through the canals on a boat.
However, protesters held a different opinion, questioning how long Venice can last. While the millionaires celebrate, campaigners claim the city is collapsing, overrun by visitors, and seeing depopulation as residents who cannot afford the exorbitant rents are evicted.
