After being arrested for violence, 29-year-old American sprinter and former world 100-meter champion Fred Kerley withdrew from this weekend’s Grand Slam Track event in Miami, organizers reported on Friday. Kerley, who won the 100m gold medal at the 2022 World Championships, was detained by police in Broward County, Florida on Thursday.
Kerley was charged with touch or strike battery and was still being held as of early Friday, according to arrest records. According to the track and field news website Letsrun.com, the altercation that resulted in his detention happened at the official hotel for this weekend’s Grand Slam Track meeting, the second event in Michael Johnson’s recently created circuit.
