ATLANTA: In a FIFA Club World Cup Group A encounter on Thursday afternoon, Inter Miami defeated FC Porto 2-1 thanks to a goal by Lionel Messi on a free kick in the 54th minute.
Samu Aghehowa’s penalty shot gave Porto the lead in the eighth minute, while Marcelo Weigandt helped Telasco Segovia tie the score in the 47th.
Messi’s 68th goal from a free kick in his storied career gave Miami their second goal in the opening ten minutes of the second half against Porto goalkeeper Claudio Ramos.
After Miami tied Al Ahly 0-0 on Saturday and Porto lost to Palmeiras 0-0 on Sunday, both teams scored their first goals of the competition.
