As tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors erupt in the wake of last month’s deadly attack on tourists in India’s Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Russia and Iran urged for a de-escalation between Pakistan and India on Monday.
Following a series of acrimonious threats and diplomatic tit-for-tat actions, New Delhi accused Islamabad of being responsible for the April 22 incident in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. Islamabad has vehemently disputed this accusation as unfounded.
However, Islamabad claims to have “credible intelligence” that India plans to take military action, escalating the likelihood of a neighborly conflict.
“We hope that the parties will be able to take measures (…) that will reduce tensions,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, adding, “we are following the tense atmosphere with great concern.”
