GENEVA: The United States and China concluded Saturday’s first day of intense trade negotiations in Geneva, their first in-person encounter since President Donald Trump levied a new round of heavy tariffs on Chinese goods.
Held at the Swiss ambassador’s home, the private talks came as both parties indicate a cautious desire to defuse one of the most serious trade standoffs in recent memory.
For the first time since Trump imposed harsh new tariffs on China last month, which sparked fierce retaliation from Beijing, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
