KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated Sunday that Kyiv was “ready” for direct negotiations with Russia and that he anticipates Moscow will agree to a 30-day truce that will begin on Monday.
Zelensky made his remarks just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested holding direct negotiations with Kyiv in Istanbul this month, but he made no commitment to the US-backed, European leaders’ 30-day truce.
“There is no need to carry on with the murders, not even for a day. Ukraine is prepared to meet with Russia once it confirms a complete, enduring, and trustworthy ceasefire beginning tomorrow, May 12, Zelensky posted on social media.
Zelensky also expressed optimism about Russia’s consideration of ending the conflict, which has been going on for three years and was sparked by Moscow’s invasion in 2022.
