Following the discovery of fresh DNA evidence, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction of a man who had been imprisoned for over 38 years for the murder of a woman.
In 1986, 21-year-old bartender Diane Sindall was killed by Peter Sullivan after she was brutally sexually assaulted while walking home from work in Birkenhead, Merseyside.
Last year, after new testing revealed a DNA profile linking an unidentified attacker in semen samples recovered from the crime scene, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), the statutory body established to look into possible miscarriages of justice, had referred Mr. Sullivan’s case back to the appeal court.
During his video-link appearance from HMP Wakefield, Mr. Sullivan broke down in tears.
