PARIS: Junko Tabei of Japan became the first female climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 16, 1975.
The highest peak in the world will see its thousandth female ascent half a century later.
Most people who have climbed the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) peak are men.
An AFP examination of data from the Himalayan Database shows that by May 2025, women had climbed to the top 962 times, while males had done so 11,955 times.
won’t be restricted
Thirty-eight men had climbed Everest before Tabei in 1975.
She had had trouble finding sponsors for her voyage with her all-female team, sometimes being told that they would be better off taking care of their kids.
