A UN expert said Thursday that he was looking into “credible reports” that Rohingya refugees were ejected from an Indian naval ship and dumped into the Andaman Sea, calling it a “unconscionable” act.
The United Nations special rapporteur on the rights situation in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, called the notion that Rohingya refugees were thrown into the water by naval warships “absolutely ridiculous.”
“I am seeking further information and testimony regarding these developments and implore the Indian government to provide a full accounting of what happened.”
Andrews does not represent the UN; rather, he is an impartial expert appointed by the UN Human Rights Council.
