A professor who was jailed for making comments on the military battle with Pakistan online was given bail by India’s top court on Wednesday, but the inquiry against him was not halted.
Professor of political science Ali Khan Mahmudabad of Ashoka University, a private liberal arts institution, was arrested on Sunday over a Facebook post that attacked people who were “mindlessly advocating” for war.
The “optics” of two female army officers who had given press briefings, he added, “must translate to reality on the ground otherwise it’s just hypocrisy.”
Since then, Mahmudabad has claimed that his remarks were “misunderstood” and reiterated his “fundamental right to freedom of thought and speech.”
He faces charges under several parts of the Indian criminal law, including putting the nation’s
