Chicago’s law department said Thursday that the gift will be made in lieu of the $130,000 that Chicago police had requested Smollett pay to cover the costs of the investigation.
The funds will be used to benefit Chicago’s impoverished youngsters through the Building Brighter Futures Center for the Arts.
Smollett claimed to have been the target of a racial and homophobic attack in 2019. However, he was accused of lying to authorities in a case that has taken many different turns. Smollett has consistently insisted that it was not a fake, and the charges were eventually dropped.
“The City believes this settlement provides a fair, constructive, and conclusive resolution, allowing all the parties to close this six-year-old chapter and move forward,” a legal department representative stated.
