Due to the pending arrest order issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Russian president, Vladimir Putin will not be attending the BRICS summit in Brazil next month, the Kremlin announced on Wednesday.
Since he ordered his soldiers into Ukraine in 2022, Putin has been wanted by the ICC in The Hague for the alleged illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.
Putin will take part in the July 6-7 BRICS heads of state conference in Rio de Janeiro, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said reporters via video link. “This is due to certain difficulties in the context of the ICC’s requirements,” he stated.
Putin frequently praises the BRICS group as a counterbalance to what he denounces as Western dominance in international affairs.
