Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, shocked progressive activists who had united to stop the more moderate former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo from winning the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City on Tuesday.
However, the unexpected result also excited national Republicans, a completely different demographic.
