MEXICO CITY: According to officials on Wednesday, gunmen opened fire on a holiday celebration in the central Mexican city of Irapuato on Tuesday night, killing at least 11 people, including a teenager.
A number of other people were hurt and sent to the hospital.
According to local reports, the attack took place during a Catholic holiday celebration. The event is scheduled to commemorate the Catholic holiday of John the Baptist’s birth.
Twenty more people were admitted to hospitals with gunshot wounds, according to the Guanajuato attorney general’s office. Guanajuato is a state that has long been plagued by gang violence.
