Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s army, has declared that his forces had halted Russian advances in the Sumy border region in the northeast.
Syrskyi said that the Russian summer attack in the region had been “choked off” and that the line of battle had been “stabilized” during a visit to the front on Thursday.
But Syrskyi also mentioned that new fortifications were desperately needed and that he had personally visited the area to inspect them.
Syrskyi’s remarks about Ukrainian troops’ victories in Sumy support recent claims by Ukrainian officials that Russia was reducing its pressure on the area.
