India’s unilateral attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and stop arbitration procedures was denied by the Court of Arbitration, which is in charge of the agreement, and instead decided in favor of Pakistan’s position.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration’s (PCA) ruling upholds Pakistan’s long-standing stance that neither side may unilaterally suspend or cancel the Indus Waters Treaty. According to the court, India is not permitted by the treaty or international law to interfere with the arbitration process or to back out of its commitments without both parties’ approval.
India’s objection is dismissed by the court.
Pakistan has been contesting India’s plea to halt the arbitration proceedings on its hydropower projects on the western rivers since 2016 as a breach of the treaty.
