KARACHI: With numerous challans, vehicle impoundments, and mounting public discontent, the Sindh government’s move to mandate new license plates for all vehicles has become a significant annoyance for Karachi’s residents.
Citizens are flooding the Excise Department’s offices throughout the city, causing a massive backlog in the issuance of new plates. However, delays in issuing the new plates have grown commonplace as a result of slow processing and poor infrastructure.
More than 6,000 people approached the Civic Center, where new license plates are provided, in the last ten days alone, only to be informed that rapid issuance is not feasible.
Only 500 motorcycle number plates were sought in the previous two months, according to an Excise official who acknowledged the increase in demand.
