Following a notable rise in temperature in the northern areas, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) on Thursday issued warnings for possible flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF).
The NEOC of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a statement that the country’s northern areas were experiencing an increase in river flows due to the melting of snow and glaciers brought on by the rising temperatures.
The Husher and Saltaro rivers at Ghancha, the Braldu River at Shigar, the Ghujerab and Shimshal rivers at Hunza, and the Uzhnu Gol in Chitral are among the regions that need close watch.
Due to “heavy to very heavy rains” in various locations, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also issued warnings regarding mudslides, landslides, and flash floods.
