Los Angeles: The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a tsunami warning was issued in response to a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of the US state of Alaska on Wednesday.
According to the USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was about 54 miles (87 kilometers) south of the island town of Sand Point, and it struck at around 12:37 local time (2037 GMT). At 20.1 kilometers, the earthquake’s depth was quite shallow.
After the tremor, authorities issued a tsunami warning for the Alaska Peninsula and South Alaska.
According to Palmer, Alaska’s National Tsunami Warning Center, “a tsunami has been confirmed and some impacts are expected.”
“South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, Pacific coasts from Kennedy Entrance,” were the areas for which the alert was issued.
