ISLAMABAD: Amid concerns and opposition from both sides of the divide, the Senate passed the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to abolish the death penalty for harboring hijackers and publicly stripping a woman of her clothing. This is part of an effort to ensure that the nation’s policies are in line with its international commitments, The News reported on Saturday.
In order to comply with international commitments under the GSP+ trade agreement with the European Union (EU), which mandate that the death penalty be reserved for the most serious crimes, Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry introduced the bill in the House.
The proposed law proposes to substitute life in prison for the death penalty under PPC Sections 354-A and 402-C.
