Asad Qaiser, a former speaker of the National Assembly and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has declared the start of a lawyers’ campaign opposing the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, claiming it poses a serious threat to democratic values.
Even though the federal government vehemently opposed the implementation of the new constitutional amendments last month—which were allegedly related to provincial rights—the proposed 27th Amendment was once more brought up for consideration.
“The PTI will also consult lawyers on the 26th Amendment,” Qaiser stated during a press conference on Sunday, which was attended by former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair Umar and Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the leader of the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP).
