A shepherd in the Ghizer area of Gilgit Baltistan (GB) has been recognized for saving hundreds of lives by sounding the alarm when his village was in danger of being destroyed by a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF).
According to officials on Friday, the natural occurrence caused massive floods and extensive damage, resulting in the creation of an artificial lake.
Faizullah Firaq, the spokesperson for the GB government, acknowledged that flooding and devastation were caused by the glacier burst at Tali Das in the Gupis district of Ghizer.
While in the mountains, Shepherd Wasiat Khan became aware of a problem. He knew the community below was in serious danger since he could see a glacier rupturing from where he stood.
