In a landslide victory on Sunday, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele—dubbed the “world’s coolest dictator”—announced himself the victor, saying he had over 85% of the vote, despite the fact that election results have not yet been made public.
According to Reuters, Bukele, 42, a well-known politician in El Salvador, was expected to win a second five-year term because of his effective anti-gang campaign and increased security.
Despite worries about the deterioration of democracy, he claimed that his New Ideas party also won at least 58 seats in the 60-seat legislative assembly.
“A record in the entire democratic history of the world,” Bukele posted on the social media platform X. “I’ll see you in front of the National Palace at 9 p.m.
