In response to concerns raised by Pakistan’s recent elections, the US House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee issued a resolution aimed at supporting democracy, transparency, and human rights in the country.
The resolution, which got unanimous support with 50 votes in favor and none opposed, will now be referred to the House of Representatives for additional study and approval.
The resolution, tabled on September 30, 2023 but adopted on only yesterday, highlights numerous crucial demands for Pakistan’s political process. It demands transparent elections, the protection of human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.
Furthermore, the resolution underscores the need for a probe into allegations of influence and irregularities in the February 8 elections.Furthermore, the resolution urges US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to improve discussion and cooperation with Pakistani authorities in order to address these issues and promote democratic norms in the area. It also urged Pakistan to hold transparent elections that reflect the people’s aspirations.
