In a post on X late Monday, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its alarm at the “escalating security situation in Tripoli with intense fighting with heavy weaponry in densely populated civilian areas.”
“The Mission reminds all parties of their responsibilities to protect civilians at all times and calls on all parties to immediately cease fighting and restore calm,” UNSMIL continued.
“War crimes may be committed when civilians and civilian property are attacked.”
According to Reuters, there was gunfire in Tripoli when word spread that Abdulghani Kikli, a well-known commander of the Support Force Apparatus (SSA), one of the most potent armed organizations in the capital, had been slain. According to its website, the Support Force Apparatus (SSA) is a security organization that is backed by the state and connected to the Presidential Council.
