In November 2019, Pa Edrissa Manjang started working for Uber Eats. The company’s app did not frequently request that he upload selfies to apply for jobs.
Nevertheless, the Uber Eats app, which runs on Microsoft, strengthened these authentication requirements.
Additionally, it stated in 2021 that his account would be deleted due to “continuous mismatches” following “careful consideration.”
“Harrassment based on race”
An Uber spokesperson stated: “Our real-time ID check is designed to help keep everyone who uses our app safe and includes robust human review to make sure that we’re not making decisions about someone’s livelihood in a vacuum, without oversight.”
Mr. Manjang’s case was financed by the App Drivers and Couriers Union and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
The EHRC was worried that he had lost his job due to artificial intelligence in facial recognition checks.
