In March, Richard “Rick” Slayman, a Boston resident, underwent a four-hour surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) to receive the organ in a global first.
The 62-year-old has a chronic illness called end-stage renal failure, which prevents the kidneys from functioning normally.
“I’ve been hoping for this moment for a long time—leaving the hospital today with one of my best health reports in a long time,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
He expressed his gratitude to the medical professionals that assisted him and looked after him both before and after his historic transplant.
He continued, saying, “I’m eager to get back to spending time with my loved ones, family, and friends without having to worry about dialysis, which has negatively impacted my quality of life for a long time.”
I would want to express my gratitude to everyone who has read my story and sent me best wishes, especially those kidney transplant candidates. Not only do I have a fresh start today, but so do they.
