Joel Cauchi, 40, was named by New South Wales Police as the perpetrator of the attack at the Westfield Shopping Center in Bondi Junction on Saturday.
After fatally stabbing six people—five women and one man—and hurting multiple others, including a nine-month-old infant, he was shot and killed by an officer.
Speaking on Monday in front of their house, Andrew Cauchi expressed his “deepest apologies” and “heartbreak” for the victims.
“I made myself a servant to my son when I found out he had a mental illness,” the 76-year-old continued.
He’s my boy. And the monster I’m in love with is a monster in your eyes. He seemed like a really sick boy to me.”
Police in New South Wales are investigating the likelihood that Cauchi specifically targeted women in the assault.
