Concern over the gradually declining space for human rights defense activities in Pakistan has been voiced by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).
“HRCP has experienced a number of capricious, unlawful, and unwarranted actions in recent months that have hindered the organization’s capacity to fulfill its mandate,” HRCP chairperson Asad Iqbal Butt said in a statement on Wednesday.
The rights of all people and citizens, as guaranteed by Pakistan’s Constitution and its international commitments and obligations, serve as the foundation for HRCP’s activities.
“We are disappointed to see that individuals posing as representatives of the security apparatus have interfered with the HRCP events by telling our employees or the venue that an indoor gathering required a no-objection certificate.
