Many consider a late-night gelato to be a staple of Italian culture, but a recently passed city law puts this tradition in jeopardy.
The municipal government of the city has submitted a legislative starting document that, if approved, may result in the ban of late-night ice cream as early as next month.
The plan, which would apply to 12 districts, would outlaw any takeout, including pizza, and alcohol after midnight in an effort to disperse rowdy groups who disturb the peace on the streets of the Italian city and keep the populace awake.
The objective is to strike a balance between residents’ peace and quiet and socializing and entertainment, according to deputy mayor Marco Granelli.
