Weeks after an enlistment order forced many men of conscription-age to attempt to escape, Myanmar’s military administration has decided to forbid men of that age from leaving the nation for employment.
Authorities said on Thursday that they will stop accepting applications for work permits from men abroad.
Previously, residents had been permitted to go for employment opportunities overseas, and there is a sizable diaspora of Myanmar citizens employed in other Asian nations.
However, the limitations coincide with heightened resistance to the junta in the nation’s protracted civil war.
After months of defeat, the junta had issued the conscription decree in February.
In the three months that followed, around 100,000 men requested for work visas as part of a larger influx of refugees.
