Leading member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Faisal Karim Kundi, took the oath of office on Saturday to become the 36th Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), succeeding Haji Ghulam Ali, who had been appointed to the position in 2022.
Along with party loyalist Saleem Haider for the position of Punjab Governor, Kundi was previously nominated by the Bilawal Bhutto-led party for the important constitutional job.
Following the failure of the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to gain a simple majority in the polls held on February 8, Kundi was appointed as part of the power-sharing agreement between these two parties to establish a coalition government.
According to the PPP-PML-N agreement, the former was able to obtain important executive and constitutional positions, such as the leadership of the Senate, the presidency, KP and Punjab governorships, Balochistan chief ministership and National Assembly’s deputy speakership.
In return, the PPP ensured the PML-N of its support for the latter’s government in the Centre and Punjab along with the positions of PM, Punjab chief minister, NA speaker along with Sindh and Balochistan governors.
