KARACHI: Last night (Monday), Karachi’s waters experienced bioluminescence, a rare and amazing occurrence that lit up the coastline in blue.
At one of the port city’s beaches, the stunning blue color shimmering in the waves rushing onto the coast provided a mesmerizing display.
Moazzam Khan, a technical adviser for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Pakistan, describes nighttime bioluminescence as a chemical process wherein organisms in the seawater create light.
Khan informed Geo News that the blue shine in Karachi’s sea was generated by noctiluca scintillans.
According to him, this marine species—which is even tinier than mustard seeds—is also known as “sea fire” or “sea twinkle.” But the fact that it exists at all indicates how rich the sea is.
