This season, doubles player Gabriela Dabrowski cemented her spot in Canadian tennis history by making history multiple times. Last summer at the U.S. Open, she and Erin Routliffe became the first Canadian team to win a Grand Slam women’s doubles title. A few months later, Dabrowski helped Canada win the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time, capping an incredible campaign. “It was really amazing,” Dabrowski remarked. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”During the Spanish women’s team tennis tournament, Leylah Fernandez was a formidable force for the Canadian team. After dominating its way into the weekend playoffs, Canada defeated Italy 2-0 in the championship game. The native of Montreal, Fernandez, triumphed in each of her five games while The doubles match wasn’t necessary after Stakusic and Fernandez won their singles matchups in straight sets, but Ottawa native Dabrowski was prepared if the best-of-three match went the full three sets. “I just feel like we’re pretty good front-runners and we’re pretty good with carrying momentum very quickly,” Dabrowski stated. In 1963, Canada participated in its first edition of the yearly competition, which was then called the Federation Cup. The best outcome for the nation thus far was a 1988 semifinal berth.
