Once “The Greatest” changed his name to Cassius Clay, the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home in Louisville, Kentucky, was transformed into a museum that provided a window into his formative years.
Along with two other properties, one of which was to be converted into a welcome center and gift shop and the other into a short-term rental, it was put up for sale on Tuesday.
For the three houses, the owners are asking for $1.5 million (£1.1 million). “The best possible result,” according to co-owner George Bochetto, would be to find a buyer willing to keep Ali’s childhood house as a museum.
Bochetto, a Philadelphia attorney and former Pennsylvania state boxing commissioner, remarked, “This is a piece of Americana.”
This has happened in the past. And it must be handled and honored as such.”
Shortly before the boxer passed away in 2016, the museum opened.
Bochetto and his then-business partner had the frame house restored to look like Ali, his parents, and his younger brother’s house.
In a 2016 interview, Bochetto remarked, “You walk into this house… you’re going back to 1955, and you’re going to be in the middle of the Clay family home.”
