KARACHI: On Saturday, a local court denied the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) request for an extension of Sarim Burney’s physical remand and instead placed the social worker in jail on judicial remand.
Additionally, Burney’s bail petition was scheduled for hearing by Judicial Magistrate (East) Khaliq ul Zaman on Monday, June 10.
Burney was placed under physical remand for two days, and he was brought before the court today.
Speaking with reporters at the court, the social worker clarified that he was correct about the matter.
“I don’t think the papers contain any errors. Burney remarked, “I am in charge of the system and I am being punished by it.
The social worker continued by saying that the FIA is unaware of all the discussions around the issue.
Burney, who oversees the non-profit Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, was arrested on June 5 as he arrived at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport after his visit to the United States.
Following a report from US officials, the social worker was charged with human trafficking, smuggling, and illegally shipping minors to the US. This led to his detention and subsequent remand by the FIA.
