ISLAMABAD: In the iddat case, sometimes referred to as the “un-Islamic nikah” case, Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, filed a motion with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday asking for the postponement of her sentence.
Bushra submitted the plea, alleging that her appeal against the conviction is still pending, through her attorney, Barrister Salman Safdar.
The petition highlighted the former first lady’s entitlement to a sentence suspension while bemoaning her “prolonged incarceration”.
“It is imperative to decide the suspension of sentence of the petitioner [Bushra] as early as possible in the interest of justice,” the plea agreement states.
Earlier this year, in February, a trial court determined that Khan and Bushra’s nikah was fake, leading to their respective sentences of seven years in prison.
The court was approached by Bushra’s ex-husband, who argued that their nikah was not valid because it was solemnized during her iddat period.
The court claimed in its 51-page detailed ruling that their marriage demonstrated dishonesty and fined them each Rs. 500,000, with a further four months of imprisonment if they failed to pay.
