The Lahore High Court has issued an order prohibiting cars from producing smoke, a bold move to address environmental and public health issues.
This ruling was made at a hearing on smog removal petitions. Judge Shahid Karim gave orders for quick action against cars that were smoking during the hearings. The traffic police were directed by the court to submit infractions to the appropriate authorities as soon as possible and to take severe measures against such cars.
“Traffic police should take action against smoke-emitting vehicles and inform the department concerned,” the judge said.
The highway police were also assigned to deal with incidences of people starting fires and to improve management of fires that occur in the vicinity of motorways.
The court stressed that failure to ensure that the instructions are followed could lead to contempt of court proceedings against the Motorway Inspector General (IG).
A related milestone was the submission of a thorough report on heat stroke incidents by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), which highlighted ongoing efforts to lessen the effects of excessive heat.
